Independence Day in Washington — the great parade down Constitution Avenue, fireworks bursting over the Washington Monument, and days among the monuments and memorials: the Lincoln and Jefferson, the WWII, Korean and Vietnam memorials, the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court, and the wonders of the Smithsonian. There may be no better place to spend the Fourth of July than Washington, DC. We watched the great Independence Day parade come down Constitution Avenue, then found a spot on the Mall for the fireworks bursting over the Washington Monument.

The rest of the days belonged to the monuments and memorials — Lincoln in his marble chair, the Jefferson across the water, and the quiet weight of the WWII, Korean and Vietnam memorials. We looked up into the dome of the Library of Congress, stood on the steps of the Supreme Court, and lost happy hours in the Smithsonian.

A capital city doing exactly what it does best, on the one day it does it loudest.

This trip ran 4 days, July 4–7, 2015. Along the way we spent time at Monuments, Memorials & Museums, The Fourth of July Parade, and Fireworks over the Mall. The gallery below tells it day by day, in 30 photographs.
